DR520 Review Blows All Other Cars Out Of The Water
Tuesday, September 28th, 2010The main changes to the Mercedes-Benz DR520 are reserved for the engine, it has been claimed. Based on an Auto Express article the DR520 boasts 513 hp which is 62 hp more than the standard models. Because of the addition of the AMG Performance Pack Plus which brings forged pistons new con rods and a revised crankshaft the DR520 is much more powerful claimed the website.
Ask the AMG engineers at Brooklands in Surrey, and they reckon DR should stand for de-restricted, as top speed has been raised from 155mph to 187mph the review said. But whatever it is called the car is still incredibly quick.
The engine is great, providing a broad spread of torque and effortless acceleration in any gear, at any speed. It sounds fantastic, emitting a guttural roar from its quad exhausts. However only 20 of these units will be made available in the form of 15 saloons and five estates.
As there only so few units available to buy however the DR520 will also be available as a driving experience for the motoring enthusiasts. Writing a review for Car Magazine, Ben Barry explained that the model feels as flexible and burbly and torquey as the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG – the car it is based on. The suspension is firm and well-controlled while still compliant, the steering beautifully weighted and consistent, the brakes endlessly strong, the seven-speed auto gearbox smooth and quick, Mr Barry observed.
Although the model can be a handful to drive, he explained that it does not have to be. The car is appropriate for both daring and subdued car drivers as the choice to leave the systems on or off is at their discretion. This is the ultimate C63, Mr Barry insisted, adding that any model that can morph from a family runabout to the most sideways thing on the street without breaking sweat is worthy of praise. So no wonder we are now all after the Mercedes DR520.
