How To Check A Used Car?

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

It seems you have looked at every used car in your area and have finally decided on the one to purchase. Before you put down your money, you need to make sure this little jewel is worth what you are willing to pay and the used car salesman is willing to accept.

Here are a few tips that you can use for an on the spot inspection of the vehicle:

1)Body damage this is a little tricky to determine but you can do some checking. Lit the hood and trunk and inspect the paint edges feeling to see if it is rough. Look for overspray on the inside of these areas and also make sure the paint inside the hood matches the outside of the vehicle. Stand in front of the car at each corner and look down the body line of the vehicle checking for waves. Open the doors and look for overspray or a paint line on the door jams.

2)Engine and transmission lift the hood and look carefully at the engine and do not be duped by a clean compartment. Look at the belts and hoses, the air filter; inspect the oil and transmission fluid by sniffing it. If you smell smoke, that could indicate problems. Start up the car and listen to the engine for knocks and metal noises; put the transmission in gear does it clunk or go smoothly. Look under the vehicle for leaks if you find water don’t worry that’s just the a/c.

3)Electrical start the car and turn on all the electrical features ensuring everything works properly. Windows should roll up smoothly and quickly, door locks should work, the a/c should blow cold, the heater should heat and always check the windshield defroster if it smokes or has a funny smell, the heater core could be bad. Make sure the wipers work properly as well as the horn, turn signals, hazards and headlights.

4)Test Drive and make sure to check all functions of the moving vehicle including the brakes, steering, suspension, engine response and transmission. Before you take off look at the tires and inspect the wear and tread depth. If the tires have scalloping or damage you should get the owner to replace them prior to purchase.

5)After the Test Drive turn off the car, pop the hood checking for temperature issues and smell. Also get back down again and look under the vehicle checking for any residue on any surfaces.

6)Before you purchase take the car to a trusted mechanic and have them go over it as well. Ask for receipts and service or repair invoices as well.

If your potential car purchase lives through all that scrutiny then buy it. If it fails a few tests, you will need to determine the potential costs you might incur and if you really want to buy a vehicle with possible problems.

The bottom line is, it is next to impossible to determine if a vehicle is good or bad, but you can decide whether or not it is worth the risk of buying.

A Quiet Achiever The Mitsubishi TL Magna

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

The Mitsubishi TL Magna is undoubtedly the quiet achiever of the big car scene. It outsells Toyota Camry V6 easily. Comfort in the Magna/Verada is pretty good, though we have a hard time looking past the compromised driving position. Mitsubishi has decided not to fit reach-adjustable steering on this car. That said, Mitsubishi has one up on the opposition, offering electrical height and slide adjustment on the driver’s seat right across the Magna/Verada range. Lumbar adjust is also fitted to all models, and a lever to tilt adjust the backrest. The front seats are comfortable over long distances, the rear seats have enough legroom and headroom to accommodate six footers and three abreast in the rear is cosy but not uncomfortable. There’s plenty of space in the boot, but the back seats don’t split fold for longer loads. Mitsubishi has chosen to add extra metal sheeting behind the rear seats to stop luggage intruding during rear-end collisions which only allows a little ski-hole in the centre.

Dual front airbags and side airbags are now standard across the entire Magna range, as are electric seatbelt pretensioners. Traction control is standard on all automatic models bar the ES. Four wheel, antilock disc brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution is standard across the range.

All Magna models are powered by a 3.5-litre V6 motor with four valves per cylinder and one camshaft per bank. The Magna ES and LS, and Veradai Ei and Xi have

The sedan’s all-independent suspension has been modified slightly with the fitment of a rear stabiliser bar on all models which is said to improve handling. Changes to spring rates and shock absorbers increase the Magna’s sporting prowess with little detriment to ride quality, with the AWD variants featuring unique tuning.

If the world was a simpler place the front drive Magna would win every car comparison hands down. If people acknowledged the difference between their motoring aspirations and motoring reality, the Magna would fit the bill for just about every large car buyer. It’s comfortable, quiet, powerful & it handles most driving situations with ease.Search Used Toyota cars for sale Westmeath for the car of your dreams.

Impressed By The Subaru Impreza.

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

It’s lashing rain down. Night closed in hours ago & the torrential weather is pure El Nino. The humid day has given way to a wet and windy evening as the Impreza’s headlights struggle to penetrate the dark, lighting a perilous path home.

Welcome to the Impreza GX. This model won’t get even half the attention of its limelight-basking WRX big sister. Yet the GX represents a greater improvement over the motor it replaces than does the WRX. Let’s just say that the GX contributed more than any other model to the Impreza range.

Coming with a whole raft of changes, both underneath and cosmetically, the Impreza GX offers loads. It now stands alone as the entry level Impreza, filling the gap where the LX once sat. Anti-lock brakes, in-dash CD player cruise control, driver and passenger airbags and driver’s seat height adjustment are all standard, with sports seats and sports suspension also thrown into the mix.

On paper, the GX should stick to the road like kids stick to their version of the truth. It does better by far. The firmness of the ride can be harsh on the smaller lumps and bumps, but it doesn’t cause discomfort. Think WRX ride quality and tone it down just a tiny bit.. The GX feels dynamically secure, too, tracking sweetly across bad roads and maintaining a neutral handling balance.

The steering is direct and nicely weighted with good feedback. The pronounced side bolstering of the front seats holds you tighter than a drunk accountant on a Friday night.

For your money, the Subaru GX offers an impressive package that, this time , has taken more than a few tips from its big sister. And it’s a much better car for it. Big sisters aren’t all bad either.

DR520 Review Blows All Other Cars Out Of The Water

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

The main changes to the Mercedes-Benz DR520 are reserved for the engine, it has been claimed. Based on an Auto Express article the DR520 boasts 513 hp which is 62 hp more than the standard models. Because of the addition of the AMG Performance Pack Plus which brings forged pistons new con rods and a revised crankshaft the DR520 is much more powerful claimed the website.

Ask the AMG engineers at Brooklands in Surrey, and they reckon DR should stand for de-restricted, as top speed has been raised from 155mph to 187mph the review said. But whatever it is called the car is still incredibly quick.

The engine is great, providing a broad spread of torque and effortless acceleration in any gear, at any speed. It sounds fantastic, emitting a guttural roar from its quad exhausts. However only 20 of these units will be made available in the form of 15 saloons and five estates.

As there only so few units available to buy however the DR520 will also be available as a driving experience for the motoring enthusiasts. Writing a review for Car Magazine, Ben Barry explained that the model feels as flexible and burbly and torquey as the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG – the car it is based on. The suspension is firm and well-controlled while still compliant, the steering beautifully weighted and consistent, the brakes endlessly strong, the seven-speed auto gearbox smooth and quick, Mr Barry observed.

Although the model can be a handful to drive, he explained that it does not have to be. The car is appropriate for both daring and subdued car drivers as the choice to leave the systems on or off is at their discretion. This is the ultimate C63, Mr Barry insisted, adding that any model that can morph from a family runabout to the most sideways thing on the street without breaking sweat is worthy of praise. So no wonder we are now all after the Mercedes DR520.
